Electric truck kicks off nationwide tour of charging sites

An electric truck made by Belgium-based OEM Windrose made its UK debut as it took its first charge at Fleete’s charging facility at the Port of Tilbury.

The site, which was opened earlier this month in front of project partners and fleet customers, is capable of charging 16 electric trucks simultaneously and is designed to give operators access to reliable, high-power charging infrastructure without the need to install dedicated facilities.

It addresses common barriers to electrification which include grid capacity, land constraints and upfront infrastructure costs. The Windrose Global E700 6×4 tractor unit began its nationwide tour of logistics sites and truck charging locations at Port of Tilbury, as it will demonstrate how long-range electric trucks can operate along UK routes owing to investment in infrastructure.

The vehicle has a battery capacity of more than 700kWh, with a flexible four-battery pack configuration designed for demanding freight duty cycles. It delivers a range of over 700km even when fully loaded and operating at high speeds.

Lamech Solomon, Head of Decarbonisation at Logistics UK said: “Logistics UK’s research into the challenges facing the decarbonisation of road logistics revealed that a lack of infrastructure was a major roadblock for a lot of operators.

“The opening of Fleete’s dedicated charging hub helps to address that by providing operators with access to high-powered charging infrastructure at a major port.”
