Key findings:
Economy, supply chain and trade
- 74% of respondents expect the same, or an increase, in the volume of orders for their business services in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the second quarter 2023.
- In February 2023 the UK and EU announced the Windsor Framework. The majority of LPT respondents expect the Windsor Framework to provide limited stability, certainty, simplicity, affordability, or efficiency.
- Paperwork is viewed as a top priority for encouraging trade.
- Respondents expressed concern regarding the Border Target Operating Model.
Vehicles and infrastructure
- 69% of road freight operators are experiencing delays in receiving delivery of HGVs.
- 47% of logistics companies are operating at near-capacity with their warehouses.
- The necessity for logistics companies operating warehouses to adapt to changing demand, technologies, and energy costs, has required them to invest in warehousing infrastructure in the past year.
Skills, employment and wellbeing
- 49% of logistics firms are expecting to continue experiencing ‘severe’ or ‘very severe’ problems with hiring mechanics.
- 18% of UK HGV drivers were hired in the past six months.
- 52% of logistics companies have employees experiencing ‘stress’ as a long-term condition.
- Flexible working is viewed as a top initiative to encourage people back to work.
Environment
- At the end of July 2023, there were 45,737 public electric charging points in the UK. However, 65% of respondents stated they had no experience of public chargepoints.
- 18% of logistics firms operate electric vehicles.
- 1 in 4 have invested in alternative fuels because of Clean Air Zones.
