FTA to pilot new course for workshop engineering managers

The Freight Transport Association has designed a new course aimed at developing the careers of high level technicians, workshop supervisors and fleet engineering managers, for a number of pilot courses during 2015.
Created with the involvement of senior fleet engineers and transport industry leaders, this course is aimed at current line managers and supervisors who wish to enhance their operational, commercial and compliance responsibilities. It will also guide those high level technicians who wish to progress their career to become a workshop manager or fleet engineer.
The course will give delegates an increased appreciation of the qualities required to become an effective workshop manager or fleet engineer. It explores methods and management techniques that will enhance confidence in relation to people management, technological advancement and customer expectations.
The course is designed to give guidance on where to find answers to the latest operational and technical requirements. The syllabus covers the importance of vehicle whole life costs, effective tyre and fuel management, vehicle specification options and workshop operations, and provides delegates with the opportunity to network with other industry professionals.

“The new Workshop Engineering Manager course has been created with the involvement of senior fleet engineers and transport industry leaders. The aim is to develop high level technicians, workshop supervisors and fleet engineering managers, equipping them with the relevant skills to raise standards, confidently line manage workshop teams, fully understand the importance of compliance and improve technical and commercial awareness. The final day will incorporate a session to identify the core values for progressive engineering managers, with the potential to enhance personal qualifications and an application pathway for EC (Engineering Council) registration. Key topics will include keeping professional, guidance on risk and sustainability.”

Industry overview highlighting the transport and logistics market leaders and sector positioning
Compliance awareness from a workshop manager – fleet engineer perspective
Transition guidance from technician to engineering manager – HR coaching and managing people to perform well
- Dealing with customers and colleagues professionally
- Improving administration and organisation skills
- Preparing for an external audit
- Identifying the core values of becoming a fleet engineer/workshop manager
