Vans top the agenda at FTA utilities conference

The Freight Transport Association’s Utilities and Civil Engineering Conference, which takes place on 23 June in Coventry, will highlight the subject of van compliance, the safe loading of vans and FTA’s Van Excellence Code which is aimed at improving standards across the van sector.
Utility companies and their contractors face a unique and complex set of operational compliance issues and legislative challenges due to the diverse and distinctive nature of their fleets, and the secondary role that commercial vehicles play in the functions their staff perform.
The conference will provide an opportunity for managers in this sector to ensure that they are fully informed of both recent and forthcoming transport legislation and enforcement developments, in addition to sharing best practice with their peers in the utilities sector.
Tim Blakemore, Editor of Commercial Vehicle Engineer, will chair the event, which will include a presentation by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) on its recent roadside enforcement activities affecting the utilities sector, developments in the VOSA testing regime and trends in MOT pass rates for the utilities sector.
Other topics to be covered include:
technological advances in vehicle safety;
safety inspections and checks for small trailers and plant;
outsourcing maintenance activities;
theft prevention best practice;
alternative vehicle technologies.
