Logistics UK gives oral evidence at two Parliamentary committees
Friday 14 June 2024
Parliament’s European Scrutiny Committee invited Logistics UK to give oral evidence to MPs about the forthcoming EU Entry/Exit System. Logistics UK Head of Trade and Devolved Policy Nichola Mallon explained the challenges of the planned system, particularly at Dover, where there is a juxtaposed border, site constraints, fragile strategic roads, and imports of just-in-time produce that cannot afford delays. We called for an upstream digital solution to remove the burden of registration to away from the border, and highlighted that if the existing plan is implemented in October, it would result in significant queues of traffic at peak passenger periods, which would have a knock-on impact on freight.
Logistics UK was invited by the House of Commons Transport Committee to give oral evidence on the use of data in logistics. During the session, Logistics UK Deputy Director – Public Affairs Ben Garratt highlighted that data-led approaches have created efficiencies, higher standards, and lower carbon emissions within the sector. We also stressed that there is a wealth of data collected by the Department for Transport, National Highways, Network Rail and others that, if supported by clear, strategic objectives, could be used to make decisions that support the logistics sector’s priorities. We also highlighted the importance of respecting commercial confidentiality in data sharing initiatives.
