Adjustment to the EU Swiss land transport agreement
The agreement on carriage of goods and passengers by rail and road between the EU and Switzerland allows the Swiss liberalised access to these countries’ respective transport markets. In exchange for this, Switzerland must have legal provisions in place that are equivalent to those of the EU on a number of aspects: admission to the occupation of road transport haulier, social and technical standards.
The list of provisions concerned has recently been reviewed by the EU/Switzerland inland transport committee. Since 1 July 2018, as far as road transport is concerned, Switzerland must now also comply with:
- EU Regulation 2016/403 on the classification of serious infringements that may lead to the loss of good repute
- the standard EU reporting form for authorities to report on the application of drivers’ hours rules
- EU Regulation 661/2009 on type-approval requirements for general safety of vehicles (which is currently under revision as part of the Mobility Package III); and
- EU Regulation 540/2014 on the noise level of motor vehicles
Other minor adjustments mostly concerning dangerous goods have also been made to take account of revised versions of certain EU rules that Switzerland already applied through equivalent provisions in its national law. More details on the inland transport committee decision page.
