Logistics UK's response to Scottish government’s aviation statement

Wednesday 24 July 2024

Responding to the Scottish Government’s new Aviation Statement, Alexandra Herdman, Senior Policy Manager at business group Logistics UK, says:

“Transport Scotland’s Aviation Statement is a welcome starting point for wider discussions with the logistics sector about connectivity, trade and decarbonisation. Airfreight in Scotland plays a critical role in the economy and Scottish exports, and we look forward to working with the Scottish Government on supporting and maximising economic growth in this area.

“We welcome the focus on increasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production and its use in Scotland, but would support a more ambitious deadline than the 2030s for agreeing options and are  pressing Transport Scotland to strive for greater urgency on its adoption across the sector. Scotland has the potential to be a trailblazer in SAF production which would enable faster decarbonisation of aviation across the whole of the UK, and we look forward to greater detail on how SAF can be produced and utilised in the upcoming Climate Change Plan.

“Logistics UK has a firm commitment to supporting innovation in low carbon fuels and our members are excited to hear more about proposals for a multimodal Hydrogen Hub at Glasgow Airport which, if successful, would allow Glasgow to be the first regional commercial airport to produce and use green hydrogen.”

Logistics UK is one of the UK’s leading business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With decarbonisation, Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc. Logistics UK supports, shapes and stands up for safe and efficient logistics, and is the only business group which represents the whole industry, with members from the road, rail, sea and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers whose businesses depend on the efficient movement of goods.
