Do not neglect your workplace pensions duties, regulator urges UK employers

Following the withdrawal of the government’s COVID-19 support for businesses, The Pensions Regulator (TPR), the body tasked with protecting the UK’s workplace pensions, has urged UK employers not to neglect their workplace pensions duties.

A spokesperson for the regulator said: “Whatever situation a business finds itself in, TPR’s message to employers is simple: do not neglect your workplace pensions duties as you adjust to the new normal.”

While the workplace has changed since the start of the pandemic, with many millions of employees now working remotely for at least part of the week, TPR has been clear and consistent in its message that workplace pensions duties have not.

Automatic enrolment duties remain the same and must be fulfilled alongside all the other requirements for running a business. While it has said that it wants to support businesses, TPR warns employers that it will take enforcement action where needed to ensure staff receive the pensions they are due.

Employers must continue to assess staff, carry out re-enrolment duties and put new staff into a pension. TPR also urges start-up businesses now opening their doors to make sure they enrol eligible staff into a pension and complete their declaration of compliance on time.

Kevin Green, Marketing and Communications Director, Logistics UK, said: “Logistics businesses have had myriad challenges to grapple with over the past two years, but it is vital that they do not lose sight of protecting their employees’ pensions.

“At Logistics UK, we are reminding our members of the importance of maintaining their workplace pension duties. Whether you have one staff member on the payroll or thousands, you must continue to support your employees by enrolling eligible workers into a pension and paying the correct amount on time to your staff pension scheme.”

More information about what members must do to comply with their pension duties can be found here.
