Logistics UK guides members on the route into the world of apprenticeships
With the ongoing driver shortage causing headaches for members across the country, and many struggling to identify the workforce of tomorrow, Logistics UK held a webinar this week to explain more about how members in England can use the apprenticeship levy to recruit and train new staff.
Led by Logistics UK’s Deputy Director of Operations, David Jordan, supported by presentations by Martin Reeves of the Institute of Apprenticeships and David Coombes, founder of Skills for Logistics, the hour-long session examined what the adoption of an apprenticeship strategy can deliver for logistics businesses in England, and the steps employers need to consider in order to get the most out of their apprenticeship programme.
Before the pandemic hit, more than 719,000 people were participating in an apprenticeship, with nearly half of them aged 25 or over. All the presenters stressed that adopting an apprenticeship strategy can help a business to fill its skills gap while essentially “growing its own talent” – the main consideration is the need for apprentices to take a minimum of 20% of their time to undergo off the job training. Each apprenticeship lasts for a minimum of 12 months, with an apprenticeship incentive payment available in England to businesses of £3,000 per candidate for any who start an apprenticeship before the end of September 2021. Check https://www.gov.uk/guidance/incentive-payments-for-hiring-a-new-apprentice for more details.
“The recent government announcement of an increase in available funding to £7,000 for an LGV or HGV apprenticeship means that the cost of acquiring a Category C + E licence will now be fully funded,” explains David Jordan, “and this is excellent news for logistics businesses looking at how to build a sustainable talent pool. Apprenticeships are a great way to identify and develop the next generation of talent which our industry needs, and I would encourage all our members to take advantage of the scheme to help tackle the skills shortage we are all facing.”
