Transport secretary urges industry to back Generation Logistics as discounted sponsorship package announced for smaller operations
Following the successful first year of the Generation Logistics campaign – the industry-led initiative tasked with finding the next generation of logistics talent – Transport Secretary Mark Harper announced that the Department for Transport (DfT) will continue to support the programme with a £300,000 contribution.
Speaking at Road Transport Expo, he described it as “a down payment on the workforce of the future” and urged industry to follow suit by supporting “this vital campaign and contribute to its continued success.”
As the campaign moves into its second year, Generation Logistics has announced a heavily discounted sponsorship package for smaller organisations to make it simpler for the whole industry to get behind the campaign.
Companies with a turnover of less than £20m will now be able to join the industry initiative as Silver sponsors for just £2,000 per annum.
“For the industry to thrive and attract the next generation of talent, it’s vital that the whole sector comes together behind Generation Logistics,” said Phil Roe, Generation Logistics’ Executive Sponsor.
“We are passionate about representing the whole sector which is why we have introduced a substantially discounted opportunity for smaller companies.
“Over the last year, the industry has delivered a high-profile, national awareness campaign – the first time this has happened – and we are definitely shifting perceptions.
“Year Two is going to be even better and I would urge companies of all sizes to come forward and support the campaign in its second year.”
In its first year, the campaign has generated almost 600,000 visits to the Generation Logistics web Hub and over three million engagements on social media.
Year Two of the campaign will focus on raising awareness among educators in schools and colleges and sponsors will be able to tap into the Generation Logistics network, promote entry-level schemes, amplify social media posts using the campaign’s channels and participate in Generation Logistics Week.
Companies looking to join Generation Logistics for Year Two can download more information from the campaign’s hub – Become a Sponsor.

Smart tachograph 2 implementation – delay for domestic vehicles
As reported in Logistics Magazine in June, the Department for Transport (DfT) has now laid the required legislation in Parliament that amends the implementation of the smart tachograph 2, which is due to come into force for newly registered in-scope vehicles from 21 August 2023.
As a result of an issue related to problems authenticating the satellite signal used to monitor when a vehicle crosses an international border, new vehicle units from 21 August 2023 will be classed as transitional tachographs until this issue has been rectified.
The legislation:
- allows for the use of transitional smart tachograph 2 for vehicles undertaking international journeys between the UK and the EU from 21 August 2023.
- defers the requirement for newly-registered in-scope vehicles used exclusively in the UK to be fitted with a smart tachograph 2 (including transitional) until 21 February 2024.
