"Momentous" Lower Thames Crossing decision, says Logistics UK

Following the announcement by Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander to approve the Development Consent Order (DCO) for the Lower Thames Crossing, Logistics UK Chief Executive David Wells OBE says it will drive growth across the whole economy:

“Businesses up and down the country are currently hamstrung by delays crossing the Thames, so the government’s decision to approve the Lower Thames Crossing Development Consent Order (DCO) is excellent news.

"The scheme has been in the planning stages for over a decade, and this is a momentous decision: industry is united in its backing for this vital trade route. When completed, it will unlock UK logistics, drive growth and help keep supply chains moving across the whole country.”

Volvo launches "660km range" electric truck

Volvo has released the first images of its new long-range FH Aero Electric 6x2 tractor unit, which boasts a range of up to 600km on a single charge.

To maximise battery space, the truck features an e-axle and a mini tag axle, freeing up room on the chassis for up to eight batteries. Longer-than-usual cab fairings help disguise the extended wheelbase needed to accommodate them.

When paired with a standard tri-axle semi-trailer, the truck can operate at a maximum gross combination weight of 44 tonnes in the UK and 46 tonnes in Ireland.

“This is a real breakthrough in zero-emission transport,” said Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks. “Now, transport companies can operate really long distances with electric trucks without having to compromise on productivity. The superfast charging and high payload capacity make this a very competitive solution.

“Electric trucks in long-haul operation will make an important contribution to reducing COâ‚‚ in our industry, since this is where you can save the most per truck. This is positive news for transport companies and for society.”
