Has COVID-19 affected compliance? Traffic Commissioner shares his view
Tim Blackmore OBE, Traffic Commissioner for the North East of England, shared his view on how Coronavirus has affected compliance in the industry with delegates at Logistics UK’s virtual Transport Manager conference, sponsored by Brigade Electronics, last week.
Speaking from a largely deserted office in Leeds, Blackmore said: “Who knew that 2020 would be such a difficult year, full of challenges that have forced us all, businesses and the public sector, to adapt to new ways of working?”
He thanked delegates for their hard work and commitment in keeping the country moving during the pandemic: “All of the Traffic Commissioners absolutely recognise the efforts the haulage and the passenger transport industries who continue to assist in the national effort in fighting this outbreak.”
On assisting the industry through the pandemic, Blackmore said: “Commissioners were very much proactive in giving support to the industry, even before the lockdown commenced.”
Blackmore also updated those attending the conference with what the Traffic Commissioners have done to ensure that regulation of the industry has continued. He also shared the Commissioners’ priorities for the year ahead to help attendees avoid non-compliance during this most challenging of times.
If you would like to hear the Traffic Commissioner speak, there is still time to book a place on the remaining Transport Manager conference on Wednesday 2 December.

LOGISTICS UK CHIEF DEFENDS TC SERVICE
David Wells, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, has launched a robust defence of the Traffic Commissioner service, following comments made by Gareth Llewellyn, outgoing head of the DVSA in front of the Commons Transport Select Committee yesterday (25 November 2020). Wells said: “To say the Traffic Commissioner service is ‘anachronistic’ and the haulage industry does not need its support totally ignores the huge benefits in safety and compliance which the service provides to the sector.”
