Roads minister launches “crucial” Generation Logistics education initiative
Roads Minister Richard Holden MP met senior logistics executives alongside the next generation of logistics talent last week to launch the new Generation Logistics education initiative.
Visiting Prologis RFI DIRFT (Daventry International Railway Freight Terminal) and Tesco to mark National Freight Week, Minister Holden celebrated the launch of Generation Logistics’ new partnership with education and outreach provider STEM Learning, which will expand the campaign’s work to educators and their pupils during its second year.
“Freight and logistics are the beating heart of our economy, and it is only right that we celebrate the sector so that it gets the recognition and support it deserves,” said Minister Holden.
“From boosting zero emission tech across freight to attracting the future generation of talent to the industry, we are working hard to drive innovation, create jobs and grow the economy by building a brighter, more innovative future for one of our most crucial industries.”
As it moves into its second year, the Generation Logistics campaign will continue to focus on raising awareness of logistics as a career option among 13- to 24-year-olds, as well as providing information and guidance for educators in schools and colleges, a crucial group of influencers for those selecting their career options.
Key to delivering the new outreach programme into schools and colleges will be Generation Logistics’ new partnership with education provider STEM Learning, the largest provider of STEM education and outreach support in the UK.
In the last year, the organisation has supported 2,000,000 young people and connected with over 400,000 teachers from every school in the UK.
The partnership will create and distribute curriculum-mapped resources for use in subjects including maths, business studies and geography.
“Logistics touches so many aspects of the curriculum and our partnership with STEM Learning will give us the opportunity to get high-quality resources directly into schools for teachers to use in their lessons,” said Phil Roe, Executive Sponsor of Generation Logistics.
“In conjunction with the innovative social media campaigns we are continuing to run, the next phase of Generation Logistics is set to be as successful as the first year in raising awareness of our industry and changing perceptions of the careers on offer to the next generation of employees.”
An intrinsic element of Generation Logistics’ first year has been to establish a network of over 300 logistics professionals who act as ambassadors to champion the industry in schools and at careers days. Their role is to highlight the variety of pathways that exist in the profession and speak directly to those considering a career in the sector, as well as to educators, parents and teachers about the opportunities on offer for new recruits.
During his visit, Richard Holden met with several Generation Logistics ambassadors and learned more about their roles, experiences in the sector and why logistics should be a career of choice for young people.
