Logistics UK's CEO David Wells OBE attends BTOM meeting with Defra Minister

Wells' meeting which also included other senior industry representatives, comes after the recent government announcement that the introduction of Safety and Security declarations is to be delayed.

Regarding the delay, Nichola Mallon, Head of Trade at business group Logistics UK, said in a Logistics Magazine article on 10 October:  “News that the introduction of the Safety and Security Declarations, originally set to be introduced as part of the UK’s Border Target Operating Model (BTOM) on 31 October 2024, is to be postponed to 31 January 2025 is something that the logistics industry has been requesting for some time, but the sector needs government to use this time wisely.”

Speaking after the meeting, Wells described it as positive with the minister keen to hear about the experiences of the logistics industry. During the meeting, David highlighted the challenges of BTOM when it comes to cost, complexity, credibility and the communication of new requirements.

Logistics UK will continue to engage with government on the BTOM on behalf of members.

News In Brief

On your marks, get set... freight!

As the closing ceremony petered out and everyone went home, a large plot of land was left over from the London 2012 Olympics.

Located close to the ABBA arena, this land will now be regenerated into a rail freight campus and last-mile logistics hub.

Bow Goods Yard is currently a mix of a rail freight depot and land cleared of its light industry to make space for athletics facilities during the Olympics and has lain empty for over 12 years.

Network Rail says that the redevelopment improves rail freight capacity and efficiency by consolidating operations, enclosing, and screening the concrete-batching facility.

This enables an integrated last-mile logistics hub to be brought forward, with the scheme estimated to create up to 5,000 new jobs.
