Industry working with government to target skills shortages

Following its widespread call for information for the government’s Labour Market and Skills Consultation, the Department for Transport (DfT) has published a summary of the responses received.

Having campaigned for many years on the need for amendments to the apprenticeship levy, and the need to recruit employees from different groups, Logistics UK submitted a response to the consultation and attended the subsequent round table organised by DfT.

“For many years, the logistics sector has struggled to recruit a full workforce, and has especially struggled to attract under-represented groups such as women and ethnic minorities, as well as younger cohorts under 24,” says Alexandra  Herdman, Logistics UK’s Policy Manager. “With this consultation focussing on skills shortages and lack of diversity, Logistics UK hopes that we can begin to improve representation across the sector, as well as attracting new people who previously hadn’t considered a career in this sector.”

Responses to the consultation demonstrate that the industry is aligned in its views that reform of the Apprenticeship Levy would benefit the sector. This is something which Logistics UK has been campaigning on for a number of years, to ensure that members are able to get full value from their Levy contributions.  The business group was also glad to see other policy asks such as access to qualifications other than apprenticeships is a problem which has been identified to be addressed. As part of its ongoing work to reduce the skills shortages across the industry, Logistics UK continues to engage with both the Department for Education and DfT on the need for reform of skills provision to better serve the sector, which is struggling to find enough key roles such as mechanics and drivers.
