David Wells OBE, Logistics UK's CEO, joins stellar line up of officials at Downing Street Summer Business reception

The first official reception held by the new Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, at No 10 Downing Street was the Summer Business reception at which key business leaders from across the country were invited.

Logistics UK's CEO David Wells OBE was one of those delighted to be asked to attend.

"It was fantastic for us to be invited," says Wells. "It is recognition that the new government appreciates just how important the logistics sector is for driving the economy.

"It also shows they are determined to work with the logistics industry as closely as possible. I would like to thank the Prime Minister for hosting us and look forward to a productive relationship with the government going forward. We share the new government’s ambition to grow UK Plc and the logistics sector is a vital enabler in delivering growth and the transition to a green economy”.

News In Brief

Europa Road Southampton back to pre-Brexit delivery times

The Southampton branch of road freight operator Europa Road is part of the UK’s largest independent operator, Europa Worldwide Group.

Adrian Redmile, Branch and Sales Director at Europa Worldwide Group, said: "Over the past 10 years the Southampton team have supported customers with an excellent service, through some challenging times. We’re delighted to have returned to offering pre-Brexit delivery times, whatever the goods shipped."

Besides handling unusual ugly freight, the company’s slate includes regular goods like toys and niche items for the interior and furniture industries.

Ugly freight is a blanket term used for goods that cannot be processed through regular courier or postal channels because of their shape, size, fragility, or high value. It generally includes artworks, antiques, medical equipment, or heavy computer equipment.

Europa Road Southampton also imports for specialised customers, importing wine from France, Spain, and Italy, a sector growing annually by 10 per cent. The branch delivers an impressive 400,000 consignments using the service Europa Flow, developed following an investment of £5m into tech and infrastructure.

The service facilitates exports to the EU on DDP terms, easing customs processes. As a result, importers don't require customs brokers or have to worry about import declarations or duties.

Present schedules place transit times to Hungary at 4.1 days, Italy at 3.9 days, Denmark at 3.5 days, and Germany at just 3.1 days.
