Removal of VED relief on EV vans sends the wrong signal, says Logistics UK
There was plenty of good news for the logistics industry in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement last week (17 November 2022) – the commitments to continued road and rail infrastructure, innovation as a growth priority and carbon reduction to name but three.
However, Logistics UK expressed its surprise and disappointment that some of the measures may actually stifle the switch to zero-emission technology.
“The removal of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) relief on vans is an unhelpful signal for millions of businesses at a time when they are being encouraged to move away from diesel,” said Denise Beedell, Senior Policy Manager, Logistics UK (pictured above left).
Most logistics operators work on very narrow margins, with vehicle procurement planned well in advance to minimise disruption to cash flow.
“At a time when operators are already facing increased operating costs, the additional tax imposition will create a further burden. The logistics sector needs more incentives to make the switch to alternative fuels, not more barriers on its route to net zero,” Beedell concluded.
