Logistics UK welcomes government consultation on reforming the HGV levy

Logistics UK welcomed the government’s publication earlier this week (20 June 2022) of its consultation on reforming the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) levy.

The HGV levy was suspended on 1 August 2020 to support the haulage sector during the pandemic and the suspension is scheduled to end on 31 July 2023.

The consultation seeks industry views on two ways in which the levy could be reformed when the suspension ends. Firstly, the government is considering reforming the HGV levy so that it is more reflective of the environmental performance of the vehicle. Secondly, the government is considering reforming the levy liability for foreign HGVs, so that they only pay when driving on major roads.

James Firth, Head of Road Freight Regulation Policy, said: “Logistics UK welcomes this consultation on the HGV levy. We will be consulting with members during our current round of Freight Councils. Any concerns or issues members have will inform our detailed response to the consultation ahead of the deadline on 18 July 2022.”

The consultation will run for four weeks and can be accessed here.
