Logistics UK disappointed by delays to major infrastructure projects
Logistics UK has expressed its extreme disappointment at the delays to major infrastructure projects announced by Transport Secretary Mark Harper MP earlier this month (9 March 2023).
Several projects, including HS2, the A27 at Arundel, A5036 in Liverpool, and the Lower Thames Crossing, would be delayed to manage costs.
HS2 construction will continue, with the section from Old Oak Common in west London to Curzon Street in Birmingham being prioritised, opening by the early 2030s. Construction of other parts of the line, including full running into Euston Station, Birmingham to Crewe and Manchester will be ‘rephased’ and delayed by two years.
“This announcement from the Transport Secretary is extremely disappointing,” said Jonathan Walker, Head of Cities and Infrastructure, Logistics UK, “as it has significant implications for future infrastructure strategies. Several schemes planned for the current Road Investment Strategy 2 (RIS2) period will be pushed into RIS3 (2025-30), with subsequent schemes originally earmarked for 2025 onwards now likely to slip beyond 2030.”
The Lower Thames Crossing, which is currently in the planning process, will be delayed by two years.
“We are actively engaging with government to understand the consequences of this announcement and when we can expect schemes to be delivered, while calling for the prioritisation of schemes with significant benefits for freight and logistics.”
