Logistics UK disappointed by cancellation of two out of three Welsh road building schemes

Logistics UK has expressed its disappointment that almost two-thirds of Welsh road building schemes will be scrapped, following the publication of The Future of Road Investment in Wales report last week (14 February 2023).

The Welsh government report is based on the findings of the Welsh Road Review panel. Having reviewed 48 road schemes across Wales, the panel has recommended that 17 of them are consistent with the policies put forward in the 2021 Wales Transport Strategy. These will proceed within a new framework for road building policy, set out in the report. The other 31 schemes, however, will be unable to proceed as previously planned.

Jonathan Walker, Head of Cities and Infrastructure Policy, Logistics UK, said: “Logistics UK and its members are disappointed with the announcement that various road building schemes are to be scrapped. Despite this, we now look forward to progress being made on the remaining approved schemes, which have been on hold since June 2021.

“Overall, the report’s significant references to freight – including the recommendation that a Wales National Freight and Logistics Plan be published – are encouraging for the sector, as is the reference to driver facilities improvements. In order to deliver zero carbon and support the Welsh economy, links to ports must also be considered, and where modal shift is referenced, it is important to be realistic about capacity on the rail network.

“Logistics is a key driver of the UK economy and we are urging for the swift delivery of this strategy to avoid any lengthy delays to investment where it is needed.”

Logistics UK is seeking to engage with the Welsh government to ensure that members’ views are considered in the Wales National Freight and Logistics Plan.
