Logistics UK's Logistics Awards 2024 shortlist revealed

Logistics UK has today revealed the shortlist for its prestigious Logistics Awards 2024, the industry’s blue riband event that recognises the achievement of businesses and individuals from across the sector which powers all parts of the economy.

Logistics UK’s Board – consisting of representatives from some of the country’s most influential logistics businesses – will now complete the final round of independent judging before winners are announced at this year’s awards presentation event.

This will take place at a gala celebration at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on the evening of Thursday 12 December 2024.

Highlighting the achievements of companies and individuals that have made a significant contribution to the logistics and supply industry in the past 12 months, the awards event – sponsored by Unipart Logistics – will include a glittering champagne reception and three course meal, with top quality entertainment and dancing to celebrate the industry’s achievements during the previous 12 months.

David Wells, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, comments: “The entries for this year’s Logistics Awards demonstrate the excellence and diversity of our sector, with organisations and individuals from across the industry recognised for their high standards and commitment to delivering for customers.

"I know that our board is going to have a very tough challenge in deciding on the eventual winners, and everyone shortlisted should be incredibly proud of their achievement in making it thus far – to do so is testament to their excellence and the work which they deliver for customers.

News In Brief

Hopper wagons arrive at Mendip Rail

VTG Rail UK has completed the delivery of the first batch of 34 out of 203 new HOA hopper wagons to Mendip Rail.

The wagons, which were built for VTG at Greenbrier’s wagon manufacturing facility in Poland, arrived at Whatley Rail Sidings on 5 August, with the remaining wagons scheduled for completion and delivery throughout autumn and up to May 2025.

The order forms a substantial investment, with the new HOA hopper wagons destined to replace the aging LTF and O&K JHA hopper fleets which have been in operation for Mendip Rail since they were built almost 35 years ago.

Marc Hurn, Sales and Marketing Director at VTG Rail UK said: “We are delighted to see the first batch of these brand-new HOA hopper wagons being delivered. VTG Rail UK has been the rolling stock partner of choice for Mendip Rail for more than 20 years and this very successful working relationship has been cemented even further with VTG completing this order for the MRL fleet.”

With up to 200,000 tonnes of aggregate moved by rail from quarries in the Mendip Hills every week, each new hopper wagon has the capacity to carry 77 tonnes of aggregate.

Much of the limestone transported from the quarries is moved by Mendip Rail’s ‘jumbo trains’ for use in construction and infrastructure projects in London and the south-east. These trains typically consist of a mixture of between 40 and 50 hopper and box wagons, which equates to over 150 HGV road journeys.

When the train reaches London, it is split for onward journeys to different locations across the south-east, creating significant environmental savings compared to road travel and easing congestion on London’s busy road network.
