Van operators on the frontline of decarbonisation challenge, new supplement reveals

Van operators are industry pioneers, on the frontline of the transport sector's transition to zero-carbon vehicles, according to David Wells, Chief Executive of Logistics UK, with the Light Commercial Vehicle market perceived to be the low-hanging fruit in the race to decarbonise the sector.

Writing in the foreword of Van, the Logistics Magazine supplement published last week (11 April 2023), Wells said: “As decarbonisation has continued to climb the logistics industry’s agenda, van fleets are on the frontline of this transition, with the deadline for phasing out new petrol and diesel vans just seven short years away.”

This sentiment was echoed by Paul Kirby, Director, EV Essentials, who was interviewed in the supplement. He is less certain, however, that the government will stick to its 2030 deadline, as unlike the broader 2050 net zero target, the ban on the sale of new ICE vans and cars is not yet written into law.

“It’s a little-known fact,” Kirby said, “but the 2030 target isn’t yet legislation, so therefore is potentially moveable.”

Also writing in the supplement is Logistics UK’s Denise Beedell, who argues that the move to electrify van fleets will be hampered if there is inadequate public charging infrastructure provision. “The scale of the challenge to ensure the whole of the UK is ready to support public EV charging in time for the net zero 2050 targets must not be underestimated,” she said.

Finally, two advisors from Lex Autolease, one of Logistics UK’s Van Gold Partners, share their tips and tricks on choosing the right van or LCV for your business.
