UK van drivers’ mental health short-changed by cost-of-living crisis

According to a study of 1,000 UK van drivers by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, one in four UK van drivers experienced adverse mental health issues last year, while two-thirds felt overwhelmed at least once a month during the course of their daily business.

The cost-of-living crisis was cited as a leading cause of stress (54%), followed closely by work-life balance (36%) and finances (35%).

Over half (55%) of van drivers reported they had worked longer hours: the average distance driven per day rose from 57.2 miles in 2021 to 74 miles and the average weekly fuel spend per vehicle increased from £62.40 to £108.46 over the same period.

To help manage these daily stressors and avoid costly downtime, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is supporting businesses to reduce stress and stay on the road through it’s 'Working with you' commitment – find out more here.
