Lower Thames Crossing funding announcement – now logistics needs the full funding plan, says Logistics UK

"Imperative the government sets out plan for providing and securing the full funding required".

Speaking about this week’s (Monday 16 June) announcement of government funding to start construction of the Lower Thames Crossing, Kevin Green, policy director at business group Logistics UK said: “Efficient logistics with minimal delays is critical to the delivery of the government’s growth agenda, and our members are delighted to hear that funding has been made available to start work on the long-planned Lower Thames Crossing, after a decade of holdups at this vital interchange.

"It is imperative that the government also sets out a plan for providing and securing the full funding required to complete the project – our members deserve to be able to deliver efficiently for the industry they support, so that the economy can benefit.”

The completed Lower Thames Crossing will connect Kent and Essex through a tunnel beneath the River Thames. It is estimated that the new route will almost double road capacity over the river east of London to reduce congestion and provide connectivity for businesses nationwide.

News In Brief

London Deputy Mayor for Transport hears concerns of the logistics sector

Logistics UK held a roundtable with London Deputy Mayor for Transport Seb Dance and Transport for London (TfL) on 9 June.

The Deputy Mayor presented the current transport landscape and future priorities for London, emphasising the critical of role logistics. Members welcomed the engagement and raised concerns over the proposed Congestion Charge changes. They also strongly criticised the London Lorry Control Scheme (LLCS), operated by London Councils, as outdated, inefficient, and costly, with this backed by Logistics UK survey data on the unnecessary mileage it causes.

TfL provided an update on industrial land as part of a London Plan review and heard a clear message from members that industrial land must be protected and better integrated into urban planning to support last-mile logistics and EV transition.

Inland water freight was also identified as an underutilised asset for sustainable transport. With the grace period for the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) having ended, TfL acknowledged the logistics sector’s adaptation efforts.
