Vans come into scope of operator licensing this weekend, Logistics UK reminds members
Certain types of van will be coming into operator licensing for the very first time this weekend. From Saturday 21 May 2022, vans between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), which conduct business on a ‘hire and reward’ basis in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, will need to be specified on a standard international operator licence.
Denise Beedell, Public Policy Manager, Logistics UK, said: “Members which operate vans on a ‘hire and reward’ basis internationally must now ensure that they are specified on their goods vehicle operator licence. As the penalties for getting it wrong can be considerable, we strongly urge members which do not already hold a standard international licence to apply for one without delay.
“Original DfT estimates suggested that around 20,000 new vehicles will be brought into scope this weekend, although that figure has since been revised downwards. Unsurprisingly half of all vehicles affected are based in Northern Ireland, where operators are used to making short, frequent trips across the border to the Republic of Ireland.”
The new rules will not apply to vans conducting hire or reward work domestically, nor will it apply to vans travelling abroad on own account work.
Operator licence holders will have to either add the vehicles to their standard international licence or apply to upgrade their standard national or restricted goods vehicle operator licence.
