Logistics UK meets with senior ministers to discuss NI Protocol

Logistics UK – as part of the Northern Ireland Business Brexit Working Group (NIBBWG) – attended a number of high level ministerial meetings last week to discuss the ongoing and future impacts of the Northern Ireland Protocol on NI trade, and to set out the solutions that will provide its members with much-needed trading certainty moving forward.

In a series of meetings, Nichola Mallon, Head of Trade and Devolved Policy at Logistics UK (pictured above right), met the Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly MP, Leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer (pictured above left), and Irish Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar.

Speaking afterwards, she said: “Logistics businesses are the backbone of the Northern Ireland economy. They keep goods moving, and smooth trade between Northern Ireland, GB and the EU is vital for our sector and for economic growth.

"In all of these meetings we emphasised the need for a negotiated outcome between the UK and the EU on implementation of the Protocol that builds on the economic opportunities and reduces administrative and cost burdens on businesses. Logistics businesses need an outcome that delivers stability, certainty, simplicity and affordability and it is crucial that there is ongoing meaningful engagement with our industry to ensure any political agreement reached, works in the real world."

“Logistics UK welcomes the opportunity to represent our members’ interests at the highest level and we will continue to engage in the conversations that are driving solutions,” Mallon said.
