The government's new dedicated infrastructure authority revealed, alongside NIC report
The government has confirmed that its 10-year infrastructure strategy will be published at the same time as the 2025 spending review, alongside the establishment of the new National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority.Â
Speaking on 10 October, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones added that it will be overseen by the new National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA), which will merge the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) and Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA). He also confirmed that Sir John Armitt’s role as Chair of the NIC will be extended.
The announcement came on the day that the NIC published a new report analysing the factors that contribute to the increased costs of many major UK infrastructure projects.
The report identifies actions to improve the budgeting, specification, design and delivery of future UK infrastructure, which it claims could translate into reductions of between 10-25% in outturn costs.
Sir John Armitt said on the same day that it is time for a “proper public debate” on road pricing, stating that the decline in revenue from traditional fuel and vehicle excise duty would mean additional funding needed to come from elsewhere.
Logistics UK's Head of Infrastructure and Planning, Jonathan Walker said: “Logistics underpins every sector of the UK’s economy and is vital to driving future growth – investment in it, and the infrastructure it needs, can support the government’s ambitions for growth.
"The news that the government is establishing a dedicated authority in NISTA with a 10-year infrastructure strategy is welcome news for everyone in our sector.
"Logistics UK has been urging the government to consider the requirements of the sector as part of the planning and construction process, to allocate sufficient space for logistics facilities and ensure that the needs of the sector are included as an integral part of any planning processes – local and national.
“Our members look forward to engaging with the government’s National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority to support the needs of our industry, which enables every part of the economy to function.”
