Government pledges to “place maritime at the heart of its bold plans for change”
Transport Secretary Louise Haigh was the keynote speaker at a recent UK Chamber of Shipping event and set out her vision for the sector.
Haigh addressed maritime sustainability and its operational impacts, how the supply chain will adapt, regulatory drivers and market-based measures.
The minister said: “Economic growth rests on maritime growth. My pledge to you is that I will place maritime at the heart of government’s bold plans for change.”
Government funding - already reaching some £206 million - has resulted in more than 100 emerging maritime-related projects in the UK, and Haigh pointed to the global shipping energy transition as driving new economic opportunities in the sector through new job creation and greater efficiency.

Logistics UK's Senior Policy Manager, Alexandra Herdman said: "With 95% of all imports and exports moving by sea, sea freight is an essential part of the supply chain and the government's pledge to put maritime at the heart of government plans is welcome news for the logistics sector as we pursue ways to reach our net zero targets.
"Maritime decarbonisation is a major challenge for the sector to address, but the government's focus and support in this area can drive innovation and speed up decarbonisation in this hard to decarbonise sector.”

Freight Innovation Fund awards support new technology adoption
A further £2 million of the Freight Innovation Fund has been awarded to support technology adoption in the logistics sector, in the programme’s fourth tranche of projects.
The projects cover low emission chilling and regeneration, testing battery and hydrogen technology for commercial vessels, ultra-rapid Li-ion batteries, analysing fleet and vessel movement data to inform infrastructure and multimodal journeys, a micro logistics transport system, and more.
The £7 million Freight Innovation Fund which was launched in 2023 and delivered by the Connected Places Catapult, runs to the end of the financial year.
Logistics UK is calling for the programme to continue, as it provides an opportunity for logistics businesses to act as test beds for new technologies, to support their path to adoption.
