Van registrations fall by a fifth, but share of BEVs doubles
Light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations were at their lowest since 2013, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) earlier this month (4 November 2022).
Just 22,386 vans were registered last month compared to 27,420 in October 2021, representing a decrease of almost a fifth (18.4%). The lightest van segment (under 2.0 tonnes) showed the steepest drop, falling by more than 80% with only 550 vehicles registered last month compared with 2,843 for the same period last year. Even the popular heavyweight vans (2.5 to 3.5 tonnes) showed a decrease of 7.6% on last year’s figures.
There was brighter news for electric van registrations, however. 13,065 battery electric vans (BEVs) were registered so far this year compared to 8,546 at the same point in 2021 – an increase of 52.9%. The share of BEVs in the LCV market is now almost double at 5.5%, meaning around one in 18 newly registered vans is now electric, compared to 2.9% as at October 2021. SMMT expects to see market share for electric vans exceed 6% by the end of the year and anticipates further growth for BEVs in 2023.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “The UK’s van market continues to be shackled by supply shortages amid difficult operating conditions, which will likely continue into 2023, easing over the course of the year. Demand for zero emission vans remains robust despite these challenges, but a successful net zero transition will require measures targeted at long-term operator confidence.”
