Logistics UK engages with government on way forward with the NI Protocol
Logistics UK met with Cabinet Ministers and representatives of other Northern Ireland (NI) business sectors recently to discuss the way forward with the NI Protocol.
The NI Protocol means that UK authorities apply EU customs and regulatory rules to goods entering Northern Ireland. This is to ensure there are no border checks on goods moving between Northern Ireland and the Republic. However, it does entail extra administrative processes including electronic import declaration requirements, and safety and security information, for goods entering Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK.
Seamus Leheny, Logistics UK’s Policy Manager for Northern Ireland, highlighted to Lord Frost, Minister of State at the Cabinet Office, Brandon Lewis MP, NI Secretary and Maroš Šefčovič, European Commission Vice-President, what needed to improve and suggested ways to mitigate the impacts of the changes brought about by the Protocol.
“The priority for logistics businesses on both sides of the Irish Sea is to ensure that trade can flow as freely as possible in both directions, with the minimum of delays,” Leheny said. “We urge the UK and EU negotiators to work towards a solution which protects the highly interconnected supply chain and ensures that businesses and consumers can continue to receive and send the goods they need without issue.”
