New rail links between Wales and England could ease M4 congestion, Logistics UK says

Improved rail connectivity between England and Wales could help ease congestion currently faced by hauliers on the M4, Logistics UK has said, following the UK and Welsh governments’ recent announcement of a new study to explore options for new rail links between the two countries.

The £2.7m study, which came about in response to the findings of Lord Hendy’s Union Connectivity Review, will help develop options for new stations and services on the South Wales Main Line. When reviewing transport connectivity across the UK for his report, one of Lord Hendy’s recommendations was an urgent need to relieve congestion on the M4.

A range of options will be considered as part of the new study, including the development of five brand new stations between Cardiff and the Severn Tunnel.

Transport Minister Richard Holden MP said: “Delivering better transport links is a vital part of how we transform opportunities for people from across the United Kingdom. That’s why I am so delighted that, working with the Welsh Government, we are getting the ball rolling on in-depth work to boost connectivity and drive growth.”

Jonas Keat, Policy Advisor – Wales, Logistics UK, said: “Logistics UK supports the development of improved local transport in the region. In its response to the consultation for the Union Connectivity Review, Logistics UK affirmed the need for greater collaboration between the UK and Welsh governments on this issue. This is therefore a positive outcome which will help to ease congestion on the M4, and hopefully lead to a significant reduction in the amount of traffic hauliers face on the road going forwards.”
