Generation Logistics already changing a million perceptions

Generation Logistics, the careers and awareness campaign launched by the industry to address challenges in recruitment across the sector, has already created more than one million engagements with target audiences, according to Transport Minister Richard Holden MP (pictured above).

Speaking at a parliamentary reception to celebrate the campaign last week (8 February 2023), the Minister was full of praise for the work being carried out by the logistics industry to address the long-standing awareness issues faced by the sector and reinforced the importance of logistics, supply chains and those that keep goods moving to strengthen the economy and build resilience.

“Our dynamic transport sector moves billions of tonnes of goods across the country every year, so we need to make sure it keeps evolving so that it’s fit for the future,” Minister Holden said, “Our Generation Logistics careers programme with the sector is helping make this industry even stronger and will help pave the way for everyone to join the sector easily and secure a good, permanent job in this thriving sector.”

Attended by more than 170 political and industry representatives, including 75 recent apprentices, graduates and young managers, the event also unveiled the campaign’s next initiative, the launch of a unique skills and careers booklet, to be distributed to schools, colleges and careers advisers across the country.

“The response to Generation Logistics has been overwhelmingly positive among our target audiences,” said Phil Roe, President of Logistics UK and Project Lead for the campaign, “and we have already driven over a million engagements with our social media campaign. All in just five months. We have lifted the lid on the wide range of careers available in the industry and challenged preconceptions about what logistics can offer.

“Having started to build awareness about our industry among potential new recruits, the next step is to talk directly to teachers and careers advisers so that they can be well informed when providing advice and guidance for those entering the workforce. This is the first time that the whole industry has come together to produce materials like this and having been asked to provide guidance for educators like this, we are excited to see the impact it has.

“Our industry is challenging, exciting and has a role for everyone, we are data experts, project managers, drivers, warehouse colleagues, we design, build and maintain key infrastructure, create new solutions, we are digital innovators, financial managers and HR and communications professionals – you name it, you can do it in this sector. Our message is that this is a great place to develop your career and explore new opportunities, irrespective of age, educational achievement, or background.

“Thanks to the support of our company sponsors, trade association partners and government, we are continuing to push out the message that this is a great place to develop your career and explore new opportunities. These first five months have demonstrated this, proving that there is an appetite for more information about our work, and we look forward to building on the platform we have established into year two and beyond.”
