New roundtable format Rail Council well received by members

Logistics UK’s Rail Council met in person for a day’s discussion and debate in London recently (30 June 2022).

Following a review of how Rail Council meetings are run, the format has been changed to create a more collaborative and engaging forum for discussion.

Members that work across the transport modes were given an overview of the potential risks and opportunities coming down the track in the coming year, how they will affect their business and how Logistics UK can support them.

Issues discussed included changes to rail legislation, a future freight growth target for rail, the introduction of the new Great British Railways, and geopolitical events. Two rail consultations: the Williams-Shapps Plan for Rail: Consultation on Legislation to Implement Rail Transformation and Great British Railway’s Call for Evidence on the Freight Growth Target were also discussed during workshops, with members sharing how the proposals could impact their operations.

Helen McAllister, Great British Rail’s Director of Freight, spoke to the group on the Call for Evidence on the Freight Growth Target and members got the opportunity to respond during the lively workshop that followed.

Alexandra Herdman, Public Policy Manager, Logistics UK, who is the current Secretary to the Rail Council, said: “After a long period of conducting Rail Council meetings online, we were delighted by the positive response we received from members to our new roundtable discussion style of meeting.

“We are now progressing plans for future roundtable discussions on live consultations in the rail freight space and will be inviting members that work across the multimodal sphere to come and contribute to the thinking and debate.”
