Van market rises by 10.8% in September

The UK’s light commercial vehicle (LCV) market rose by 10.8% in September, with the plate change making it one of the most popular months of the year, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Despite strong order books throughout 2022, supply chain disruptions have restricted model availability, meaning that September marks the first month of growth in registrations this year. However, the figures are artificially inflated in comparison with 2021, which saw the fewest registrations for the month since the 2009 recession.

The year-on-year uptick was driven by the fulfilment of orders for vans weighing more than 2.5 tonnes, up 13.9% to represent 73.8% of the market, while registrations of vans weighing between 2 and 2.5 tonnes rose by 40.8%. However, vans weighing less than 2 tonnes were down by more than a fifth (21.5%).

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries continued their upward trend, rising 70% to a market share of 4.4% – up from 2.9% in 2021. With a growing number of zero emission van models coming to market, more operators are benefiting from lower taxation, purchase incentives and zone charge exemptions. As a result, BEV volumes increased by 52.9% year on year from January to September.

UK van registrations are down by a fifth (20.1%) year-on-year overall, however, at 213,576 units, and almost a quarter down (24.8%) below the pre-pandemic five-year average.

Denise Beedell, Public Policy Manager, Logistics UK said: “While September’s figures for van registrations look encouraging, it is important not to attach too much significance to one month’s figures, and the year-to-year decline of 20.1% remains a cause for concern. However, the 70% increase in BEV deliveries, together with signs that component shortages are starting to ease for some manufacturers do offer grounds for optimism. The industry’s confidence in the economy will be crucial if growing numbers of operators are to transition their van fleets to net zero in the months and years to come.”
