Amazon makes billion-Euro investment in electrifying its transportation network

E-commerce giant and Logistics UK member Amazon announced plans to invest more than €1 billion over the next five years to further electrify and decarbonise its transportation network across Europe earlier this week (10 October 2022).

As well as allowing it to deliver packages to customers more sustainably, the investment – more than £300 million of which has been allocated to its UK operations – is intended to help spark innovation in zero-emission vehicles and encourage the deployment of public charging infrastructure, helping the entire logistics sector to reduce its emissions more quickly.

“Our transportation network is one of the most challenging areas of our business to decarbonise, and to achieve net zero carbon will require a substantial and sustained investment,” said Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO.

“Deploying thousands of electric vans, long-haul trucks, and bikes will help us shift further away from traditional fossil fuels – and hopefully further encourage transportation and automotive industries in Europe and around the world to continue scaling and innovating, as we will have to work together to reach our climate goals.”

The investment secured the backing of the new Transport Secretary, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, who commented: “Significant investments like Amazon’s will be vital to reducing emissions and meeting our net zero goals, while supporting growth at the same time. By adding thousands of electric and zero emission vehicles to its fleet, Amazon is not only working to make its deliveries more sustainable, but also stimulating innovation across the industry in the drive to cleaner transport.”

Michelle Gardner, Deputy Director – Public Policy, Logistics UK, said: “This substantial investment represents a very significant vote of confidence from Amazon in the zero-emission technology already available to decarbonise its logistics operations across Europe, including its important UK market.

“Amazon UK is an active and engaged member of the Logistics UK business community, and we welcome and applaud the size and scale of its parent group’s ambitions to decarbonise its considerable commercial vehicle fleet. This will help scale up the production of electric trucks and recharging infrastructure, paving the way for other operators to follow its transition away from diesel HGVs.”
