Driver training rules legislation parked due to general election

Proposed changes to the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) qualification have been delayed due to Rishi Sunak’s snap election call.

One of the main alterations to the scheme was to halve the minimum course length from seven to three and a half hours and for e-learning to be de-coupled from trainer-led courses.

There was also going to be more flexibility around end of module assessments and the introduction of an accelerated pathway for returning drivers.

But following the general election announcement, the Department for Transport (DfT), has said that the new regulations will still need to be debated in both the Commons and the Lords before they could become law.

Debates will now need to be rescheduled when Parliament returns, with the new government deciding legislation priorities and allocating time for debates.
