Logistics UK joins prominent industry-government forum

Logistics UK is keeping members’ interests and influence with decision makers a priority with the news that it has joined a new industry-government forum.

Launched to help the sector decarbonise and ensure its long-term sustainability, the Freight Energy Forum held its first meeting on 5 April 2023 and was established as part of the Future of Freight plan.

“As the only business group representing the whole of the logistics industry, Logistics UK is delighted to be invited to participate in the Freight Energy Forum and represent the needs of our members in identifying and clarifying the energy infrastructure and solutions which will be needed if the industry is to reach net zero,” said Denise Beedell, Senior Policy Manager, Logistics UK (pictured above). “It was certainly very encouraging during our first meeting to see senior government officials engaging closely with key business sectors on the transport decarbonisation agenda, and to have the opportunity to raise members’ interests in such a prestigious forum.”

Twenty-five senior-level representatives, drawn from across the energy, rail, maritime, automotive, infrastructure, warehousing and logistics sectors, attended the first meeting.

The forum aims to support the freight sector across all modes in its transition to net zero by 2050, as well as creating a plan to roll out future energy infrastructure for the industry, and exploring solutions to help the freight sector start reducing emissions immediately.

The forum’s members have declared themselves to be technology-agnostic, meaning participants will keep an open mind by reviewing a range of potential solutions, and not prioritise one type of technology over another.

Transport Minister Richard Holden MP said: “We recognise that the transition to clean fuels is one of the biggest challenges facing the freight sector and we are committed to delivering a strong future for the sector that will help create good long-term jobs.

“Clean energy supplies and infrastructure are critical to the drive for a cleaner freight sector and the Freight Energy Forum will address those longer-term challenges across the whole industry.”
