Extension of drivers’ hours relaxation is a sticking plaster, not a solution, according to Logistics UK

The Government’s announcement late last week (6 August 2021) that it would be extending the temporary relaxation of drivers’ hours until October 2021 is only of limited value and will not address the deep-rooted causes of the driver shortage crisis, Logistics UK has said.

“The extension of the drivers’ hours relaxation by Statutory Instrument is a sticking plaster which will not solve the shortage of drivers in the logistics sector,” said James Firth, Head of Road Freight Regulation Policy, Logistics UK. “It is of limited value and only increases pressure on already hard-working vocational drivers.”

The original temporary relaxation of drivers’ hours, which Logistics UK also opposed, ended on Sunday 8 August. Operators that made use of the original relaxation are asked to submit a completed follow-up notification of relaxation form by 15 August 2021. The new temporary relaxation will run from 9 August 2021 until 3 October 2021.

The Department for Transport (DfT) maintained that it had introduced the temporary relaxation to drivers’ hours rule in response to pressures on local and national supply chains and that the measure reflected the exceptional shortage of HGV drivers.
