Clean Air Zones in the North of England to start charging vans
Clean Air Zones (CAZs) in Sheffield and Tyneside will start to charge non-compliant vans for entering their city centres in the coming months.
Sheffield City Council has announced that it will launch its Clean Air Zone (CAZ) on 27 February 2023. The zone covers the inner ring road and Sheffield city centre, including Park Square and the A61/Parkway Junction. A Class C CAZ, the zone includes vans, HGVs, buses, coaches, minibuses and taxis, with the daily fees for non-compliant vehicles set at £10 for vans and £50 for HGVs.
In the north east, the government has approved Tyneside’s (Newcastle and Gateshead) CAZ plans and the scheme will launch for non-compliant HGVs, buses, coaches and taxis on 30 January 2023, and for non-compliant vans from July 2023. The zone covers most of Newcastle city centre as well as routes over the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh Bridges. The daily fees for non-compliant vehicles are set at £12.50 for vans and £50 for HGVs.
Denise Beedell, Senior Policy Manager, Logistics UK, said: “While many operators of HGV fleets are already planning for the daily fees they will start incurring in order to deliver into our city centres, the two Clean Air Zones being introduced in Sheffield and on Tyneside will affect operators of vans and other Light Commercial Vehicles too and may catch some smaller operators unawares.
“Logistics UK members that wish to stay abreast of the latest Clean Air Zone regulations coming into force this year will benefit from regularly consulting our members-only Clean Air Zone briefing note to keep up to speed with changes coming down the track.”
Updated at the beginning of every month, the briefing note covers Logistics UK’s policy position on urban air quality restrictions and contains information on all CAZs in development, including Low Emission Zones (LEZs) and other clean air measures proposed for cities across the UK.
