Varamis Rail’s high-speed freight solution “ticks the boxes”, says Logistics UK

Varamis Rail – the UK’s first high-speed rail logistics company providing fast, zero-emission end-to-end logistics services – hosted an event at Birmingham International Station last week to show invited guests how it is delivering a new, fully electric rail service between Glasgow and Birmingham.

Guests were invited to Platform 1 to see the former passenger rolling stock and hear how the high-speed freight and logistics service allows for integration with express passenger services on the busy West Coast rail artery, allowing Varamis Rail to find capacity in the national rail timetable usually unavailable to traditional rail freight services.

Varamis Rail’s high speed logistics service offers:

> 104 cages per train (or 20,800 parcels)

> Strategic access to urban rail stations in city centres

> Reduced distribution times

> Faster, sustainable deliveries to align with a change in consumer habits

> A reduction in unit haulage costs

The environmental benefits of an electrified rail distribution service covering large parts of the UK are currently unachievable by other transportation methods and Varamis Rail plans to continue to promote these benefits to the logistics sector and wider economy.

“We have a responsibility as a logistics sector to find more sustainable solutions that deliver visible results and this high-speed rail freight offering from Varamis Rail certainly ticks the boxes,” said Ellis Shelton, Policy Advisor at Logistics UK.

“We’ll be following the project closely and keeping our members updated with its progress.”

National Highways obtains extension to injunction covering major roads in the south east

A 12-month extension to an injunction imposed as part of measures to deter protesters from disrupting some of England’s busiest roads was granted by the High Court on Friday 5 May 2023.

The injunction covering the M25, M25 feeder roads and major roads in Kent was originally obtained by National Highways – the wholly government-owned company responsible for modernising, maintaining and operating England’s motorways and major A roads – last May and will now remain in place until 23.59 hrs on 10 May 2024.
