Logistics UK responds to government announcement on local roads repairs

Following the government's decision to reallocate £8.3 billion from the cancelled leg of HS2, Logistics UK's Head of Cities and Infrastructure comments on what this means to members

Transport secretary Mark Harper announced the allocations for the biggest-ever road resurfacing programme to improve local roads. £8.3 billion of funding which is enough to resurface over 5,000 miles of road across the country over the next 11 years.

“The allocation of this previously announced funding to repair and maintain local roads is welcome news," says Logistics UK's Head of Cities and Infrastructure Policy, Jonathan Walker. "Our members deserve to be able to use a reliable and efficient national infrastructure network to deliver for the economy.

“However, to support the nation’s supply chain and ensure that deliveries can continue to be made on time, it is vital that government provides a longer-term strategy and funding model to reinforce the UK’s transport infrastructure.

"This would enable long-term maintenance programmes to be put in place, rather than piecemeal allocations of funding that create a stop-start mentality and interruptions to the transport network.”

World's first pothole-fixing robot in development

The self-driving robot - which looks like a cross between a tank and a road roller - was created by Liverpool-based tech company Robotiz3d, academics from the University of Liverpool and Hertfordshire Council’s highway engineers.

The ARRES Prevent vehicle uses artificial intelligence to identify defects in the road, and then automatically fills cracks to keep out surface water. This then helps further potholes from forming.

The ARRES Prevent can be operated without a driver, thanks to a suite of cameras and sensors, or via a human operator controlling it remotely. It is battery powered and can work after dark so that road repairs could be carried out 24 hours a day without needing constant supervision.
