DP World reports 66% increase in rail freight transport from Southampton

DP World has achieved a significant increase in the share of freight being transported by rail from its Southampton logistics hub thanks to its Modal Shift Programme trial which was introduced last September.

The trial is designed to increase the attractiveness of intermodal rail for customers through carefully considered financial incentives.

From September to February the share of freight units being moved by rail instead of road at DP World Southampton has increased by two thirds, from 21% to 35%. The increase has been supported by the introduction of four new train services from the terminal to Cardiff, East Midlands Gateway, Hams Hall and Doncaster respectively, strengthening DP World’s end-to-end logistics offer for cargo owners and freight forwarders.

Ellis Shelton, Logistics UK’s Senior Policy Advisor commented: “The results of the Modal Shift Programme trial at DP World Southampton underscore the importance of innovative strategies in promoting sustainable transportation solutions.

“The substantial increase in the share of freight units being moved by rail, from 21% to 35%, within just a few months, clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of carefully crafted financial incentives in helping incentivising customers to choose intermodal rail over road transportation.

“Moreover, the environmental impact of this shift is significant, with approximately 4,500 additional tonnes of carbon dioxide saved since the programme's inception. This translates to the equivalent of 13,500 fewer lorry journeys, showcasing the tangible benefits of transitioning towards more eco-friendly transportation modes.

“This success serves as a model for other logistics companies seeking to embrace sustainable practices and drive positive change within the industry.”

Since the beginning of the programme, DP World’s customers and supply chain partners have saved approximately 4,500 additional tonnes of carbon dioxide by choosing rail over road – the equivalent of 13,500 lorry journeys.

John Trenchard, Vice President UK Commercial & Supply Chain at DP World, said: “We believe that our Modal Shift Programme at Southampton has allowed our customers to explore how rail can be effectively utilised to achieve lower carbon international supply chains serving the UK economy.

In addition to its UK hubs at Southampton and London Gateway, DP World’s offer includes logistics, forwarding and European transport capabilities, all of which are being integrated into the company’s global network. Operating in 78 countries, DP World handles 10 per cent of world trade.
