Attention all drivers: New enforcement on parking in Edinburgh
Edinburgh City Council will begin enforcing the new law on parking on pavements and double parking, parking at crossing points and parking on verges that lie between roads and pavements from Monday 29 January 2024.
“There are some exceptions to the rules, so it’s prudent for any road users in Edinburgh – and especially delivery drivers – to be aware of the impending new restrictions and avoid unwanted fines and legal action,” said Alexandra Herdman, Senior Policy Manager at Logistics UK.
Exceptions are stipulated in the legislation and on the Council website as follows: 
-
only if the vehicle is unable to wait on the road, 
-
the vehicle must leave 1.5m of footway width for pedestrians to pass, and 
-
deliveries and collections can only be for a maximum of 20 minutes. 
There is no specific exception for delivery drivers and they are expected to follow the rules of the road like any other driver.
However, in certain limited circumstances, should all conditions be met, there are allowances to wait on the pavement or double park to allow essential deliveries to be completed.

Aberdeenshire Council, Aberdeen City Council, Dundee City Council and Scottish Broders Council have also announced they will be enforcing the ban and issuing fines.
Falkirk Council will issue warnings as an interim measure before enforcing the law and issuing fines. No date for enforcement has yet been set.
Glasgow City Council is yet to confirm its intentions.
All drivers should be aware of the rules in the local authority area they are driving in.

According to research by Bolloré Logistics, the “volatile” situation in the Red Sea – which has resulted in higher rates, increased transit times and supply chain delays – will inevitably squeeze air freight capacity until the situation is resolved.
“The increased ocean transit times will put pressure on inventories and have an immediate repercussion on air freight capacities, with significant price hikes expected on major trades,” said the company at the end of December, adding that it anticipates additional air freight capacity between mid-January and early February ex-China.
A multinational defence force, Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG) was set up last month in an attempt to safeguard commercial shipping in the Red Sea. But weeks on from the start of the conflict, shipping companies remain cautious about operations in the area.
