Logistics UK urges NI members to continue with all checks on GB goods

Checks are continuing on goods arriving from Great Britain at Northern Ireland’s ports despite a call from Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots last Wednesday (2 February 2022) to halt post-Brexit checks.

Logistics UK has urged all its members based in the province to continue with all Customs and SPS (Sanitary and phytosanitary) checks as normal.

Seamus Leheney, Policy Manager – Northern Ireland, Logistics UK, said: “Following the resignation of Paul Givan as First Minister of Northern Ireland last Friday, the political situation in Northern Ireland is proving particularly fluid at the moment.

“However, until the situation regarding the Northern Ireland Protocol has been resolved between the UK and EU, we are urging all our members to continue with full Customs and SPS formalities they have been completing to date on goods arriving from Great Britain into Northern Ireland.

“We continue to call on UK and EU negotiators to agree a negotiated outcome concerning the NI Protocol, including mitigations to ensure supply chains between Great Britain and Northern Ireland can move efficiently and with a lower administrative burden.”

OXFORD ZEZ TO BEGIN BY END OF MONTH

The Oxford Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) pilot is scheduled to begin in just over a fortnight’s time (28 February 2022). Britain’s first ZEZ, the pilot will initially cover just half a dozen streets in the city centre, but Oxfordshire County Council is already considering introducing a much larger ZEZ which will cover most of Oxford city centre next year, subject to public consultation.
