Extension of the longer semi-trailer trial

The Department for Transport has confirmed the longer semi-trailer trial transition period has been extended to 29 February 2024 and that updated guidance will be published following feedback from industry representatives.

The following is the notice Logistics UK received from DfT:

Statement to operators – notification extension

This alert is to inform you that the longer semi-trailer (LST) trial has been extended to 29 February 2024, marking a three-month extension to the previous end date of 30 November 2023. New arrangements will replace it to allow LSTs to be used on an enduring basis and not on a trial.

There are specific route planning and risk assessment requirements for LSTs in the regulations for them. There is also a requirement to use the vehicle operator licensing system to identify the LSTs being used beyond the trial.

These requirements are explained in the guidance published at: Longer semi-trailers: Full implementation guide for operators - GOV.UK

This guidance also includes some advisory issues such as driver training. We continue to liaise with industry representatives and will be updating guidance shortly, to answer queries raised by industry about route planning and risk assessments.

If members have concerns about the ability of their operation to move off the trial and onto the new arrangements by 29 February 2024, please email

History was made last week in Akureyri, North Iceland, when easyJet completed its inaugural flight from London Gatwick.

Flying twice a week - Tuesdays and Saturdays - easyJet is the first foreign airline to operate scheduled international flights to Akureyri, which not only increases tourism, but also invites valuable access to markets in the north of the country.
