DVSA and Border Force staff plan strike action

Some staff from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and most UK Border Force staff are planning to go on strike during the month of March.

DVSA staff in a variety of roles who are members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union are planning to take part in the strikes. These include vehicle standards assessors, specialist vehicle standards assessors, traffic examiners, vehicle examiners and driving examiners. The strike action, which is part of national industrial action by the PCS union over pay, pensions, jobs and redundancy terms, will affect different parts of Great Britain at different times. However, all areas of Great Britain are likely to be affected next Wednesday (15 March 2023).

Phil Lloyd, Head of Engineering Policy, Logistics UK, said: “Given the potential for disruption to our members’ operations during this period of industrial action, we have discussed the impact cancelled tests may have on expiring MOTs, where members cannot get MOT appointments, and have suggested DVSA issues three-month Certificates of Exemption which would allow them sufficient time to obtain another suitable test appointment.”

Members with pan-European operations should note that all UK Border Force staff, except for those based in Northern Ireland and Europe, will be participating in strike action next Wednesday (15 March 2023). It will also include all office-based staff, Border Force Maritime Command and operational response to illegal small boat arrivals.

The proposed strike action will impact international arrivals at all UK ports, as well as those travelling to the UK from UK border controls in Calais, Dunkirk and Coquelles in Northern France. As a result, Logistics UK is urging members to avoid international freight movements on 15 March if at all possible.
