DVSA services to be impacted during strike action starting next week

Driving tests and other services offered via the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) are likely to be affected by industrial strike action over the next two months.

The strike action is part of the national industrial action by the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union, which served notice that a programme of industrial action involving DVSA members will take place over a six-week period from next Tuesday (13 December 2022). This strike is over pay, pensions, jobs and redundancy terms.

The strikes will predominantly affect driving test centres in different parts of Great Britain at different times. For driving test candidates who have an appointment on a day of industrial action, DVSA will provide updates before the affected day. Driving tests will not be affected by the strike action if they are being taken with a delegated driving test examiner, and theory tests will be taking place as planned. Strike action may have a smaller effect on some HGV/PSV MOT tests, which DVSA believes it can manage more effectively.

Phil Lloyd, Head of Engineering Policy, Logistics UK, (pictured above left) said: “While it is encouraging that the time taken between booking and taking an HGV test has reduced to around three and a half weeks, the need to reschedule tests at short notice can be highly inconvenient for operators, during what is traditionally a busy period for the industry. DVSA is developing mitigation plans to be able to continue to provide an adequate MOT testing service during the strikes.

“Logistics UK is engaging closely with DVSA to ensure that members are fully updated about the upcoming industrial action and how it may affect them, so that they can plan ahead as far as is practicable.”
