ULEZ scrappage scheme extension welcomed by Logistics UK

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced an extension to the vehicle scrappage scheme associated with the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), to now include London-based small businesses.

Previously, the scrappage scheme was only available to sole traders and micro-businesses but following calls for reform, particularly from other Labour politicians, it will now extend to businesses with fewer than 50 employees.

Currently, 80,000 vans operating in the capital are non-compliant with ULEZ regulations. London-based small businesses that have placed an order for a compliant vehicle or the retrofitting of an existing one can apply for a grace period to continue operating in the meantime.

“Given the huge financial pressures logistics and other businesses are currently having to endure thanks to high inflation, we have welcomed the Mayor’s expansion of the scrappage scheme,” said Jonathan Walker, Head of Cities and Infrastructure at Logistics UK. “We have also asserted publicly that our members support his commitment to improving quality and driving decarbonisation forward.”

The new eligibility criteria for the £110 million scrappage scheme will come into effect at the end of July 2023. The ULEZ expansion is set to cover outer London from 29 August 2023.

See here for more information on the scrappage scheme and the application process. The full details of the grace period scheme will be available from the end of July.

EV chargers lag behind EV adoption

Data published by the Times last week shows that the ratio of electric vehicle (EV) chargers to EVs has declined over the past year.

There are now 36 EVs on the road for every standard public charger, compared to 31 at the end of 2021. However, in some parts of the UK the ratio is significantly worse. In the north west for example, there are now 85 EVs for every charger compared with 49 EVs per charger in 2021.

Logistics UK’s recent Electric Vehicle Report found that, of those using public chargepoints, over half (53%) reported difficulties in finding an available and accessible chargepoint space.

Logistics UK is continuing its calls for a comprehensive, nationwide EV public chargepoint network that is fully accessible to large electric vans now and electric trucks in the future.
