Logistics UK welcomes government’s response to Transport Committee’s inquiry
Logistics UK has welcomed the government’s publication of its response to the Transport Select Committee’s inquiry into the road freight supply chain last week (29 September 2022).
In its response, the government stated that it had taken decisive action to put in place 33 measures to help alleviate the HGV driver shortage, ranging from increasing the DVSA’s capacity to deliver vocational driving tests to delivering skills bootcamps to train up to 11,000 more people to become HGV drivers.
The government said it welcomed the Transport Committee’s steer on the central role for industry in ensuring a resilient workforce in the road freight sector and putting in place the conditions and facilities that will support recruitment and retention.
Concluding, it said: “The Government agrees with the Committee that there is more for industry to do to attract and retain talent and make investments that will improve conditions for workers in the sectors.
“We look forward to continuing our efforts across Government and working with industry and sector stakeholders to deliver a more diverse and sustainable workforce with improved working conditions to support the needs of the UK economy.”
Michelle Gardner, Head of Public Policy, Logistics UK: “We welcome the publication of the government response and are pleased it highlights the importance of our industry and Generation Logistics in attracting future talent. We look forward to continuing to engage on improving driver facilities, skills training, modal shift and other important topics for the industry.”
