Plan ahead to avoid disruption at the Channel, urges Logistics UK

Given the disruption and long delays experienced at the Port of Dover last weekend (31 March-2 April 2023), Logistics UK is urging its members to check the latest ferry crossing information before setting out and to ensure that they have their paperwork in order before making the crossing.

There is potential for disruption again this weekend during the getaway before the Easter break, starting today (6 April 2023).

While Downing Street has now conceded that post-Brexit checks contributed to the congestion experienced last weekend, the Prime Minister’s spokesperson attributed the delays to a “combination of factors” that includes a high volume of traffic and poor weather disrupting ferry journeys.

The government is now in discussion with its French counterparts about how it can further improve the flow of traffic, after the port declared a critical incident last Friday.

Josh Fenton, Policy Manager – Trade, Customs and Borders, Logistics UK (pictured above), who is liaising with the Channel Crossing Disruption Tactical Co-ordinating Group (TCG), said: “We are working to support our members to navigate these complex and frustrating delays at the Port of Dover by providing them with the very latest information and guidance as events unfold. To minimise delays as far as possible, we strongly urge members to check on ferry crossings ahead of time, ensure that all their paperwork is in order before heading to the coast and be prepared for any delay. Logistics UK encourages drivers to keep water and food in their cabs in case there is further disruption.”
